Radio Active, as Bangalore’s first Community Radio station, is committed to using technology for the benefit of the human family. In doing so, we understand and recognize the value of interdependence and the enduring value of partnerships strengthened by a sense of common purpose. Collaboration, at an altruistic level, is multi-dimensional. It stimulates greater creativity in partners while multiplying the power of individual skills and knowledge.

Radio Active therefore wishes to partner with those who share our commitment to building public awareness, garnering support for meaningful social action and ameliorating suffering wherever possible.

The RA Outreach programmes are an outcome of and a corollary to conduct fundamental to the JGI group- service before self. This philosophy is an intrinsic part of the JGI corporate philosophy and enshrined in a series of developmental programmes that together constitute “JGI Life.”

PROJECT: BUILDING BLOCKS

Radio Active has partnered with Reclaim Indiato provide informal schooling for children from the age of 5 to 15. The aim is to impart literary and numerical skills together with basic life skills that will help them to earn a living as they grow older and if possible bring them into mainstream education.

Objective

The main aim of the project is to educate the children of migrant construction workers, and focus on development and welfare of the labourers in general. An additional purpose will also include educating these nomadic and migrant labourers about community radio and how it can be used for their welfare and betterment.

In addition, Reclaim India and Radio Active will supplement their efforts of providing basic education, organizing health camps, educating them about hygiene and sanitation, tackle alcoholism, address nutrition needs for the family, preventive medicines and vaccination schedules, creating AIDS and communicable diseases awareness, in addition to producing radio programs


SCIENCE FOR WOMEN'S HEALTH – PART 1

Radio Active has signed an MOU with VOICES, a Bangalore based NGO to assist and broadcast the series titled Thayi Makkala Arogya, a project awarded to VOICES by RVPSP, Department of Science, Government of India.

Radio Active helped in conducting the baseline survey and capacity building for VOICES where over a 1000 households in Mathikere and Yesthwantpur areas and the women and anganwadis workers were trained to identify health related issues and provide solutions by making community radio programmes.


PROJECT REVIVE: UNDERSTANDING PLANET EARTH FOR WOMEN AND CHILDREN ( re-launching on August 2009)

Revive is a community based environment restoration project in Bangalore realized by the Jain Group of Institution's Community Radio Station – Radio Active 90.4MHz. This project spread over 2009-10 seeks to work at the grassroots level, starting from primary school children to high school students to educate, sensitize and encourage protection, preservation and sustainability of the Urban Environs of Bangalore which is facing several ecological imbalances and environment related problems.

Project Revive will address the concerns of the citizens with their active participation, problem solving and revitalization of their basic life-sources like water, air, energy, soil, food requirements etc. In this project school children who will be trained on the same issues will serve as ambassadors and work actively with the radio station in producing radio programmes and social action initiatives for a cleaner, brighter and greener Bangalore. Specific programmes will be designed to train children, youth and women for disaster preparedness and mitigation.

The programme will also involve addressing women’s issues in relation with health and environment that directly affects them and their families. These will include occupational hazards, vulnerability to weather related health problems like allergies, sanitation etc.

Radio Active hopes to encourage schools to take up the opportunity to set up Radio Active Revive chapters to create a spirit of caring, preserving and nurturing the environment.

Awaiting sanction from RVPSP, Department of Science, Government of India.

PROJECT: PRESERVE & ENRICH BANGALORE'S ENVIRONMENT

Radio Active in association with Eco Watch Center for Environment & Sustainable Development, Bangalore, has initiated the annual eco-education series of activities aimed at preserving and enriching Bangalore’s environmental condition. The key issues being addressed are: Urban Waste Management, Water Resource Conservation, Urban Forestry and Air Pollution.

SPOTLESS BANGALORE CAMPAIGN

Programme Brief: The programme is designed to sensitize students and develop a whole school community approach to waste management. It is important for the student to comprehend and realize the complexity of the world they live and make informed decisions and participate in the process of environmental conservation.

The project will seek to provide information and learning activities on solid waste management, encourage schools and colleges to be conscious about waste, improve systems to reduce waste which will in turn enable students to take up mini projects on waste management.

This will include film screenings, display of products made from waste, exhibitions, working model of the solid waste management, composting methodology etc.


PROJECT: RESISTANCE

Courts of Women- Awareness Campaign on Dowry & Domestic Violence

Radio Active has partnered with Vimochana and Center for Informal Education and Developmental Studies and chartered a year long course of action to create awareness and sensitize the general public on issues of dowry – its understanding, cultural moorings, social implications, financial implications etc. The other area is Domestic Violence and the active role of community radio to not only create awareness but also reduce violence, educate general public to prevent and aid victims of abuse.

The project also seeks to take a new look at the institution of marriage and help youngsters bring about a change in their own lives through dialogue, workshops, film festivals, street plays, radio dramas, group discussions, paintings, etc. which will be highlighted and broadcast on Radio Active.

PROJECT: STRI SWASTYA / AAROGYA

Community Radio- Radio Active set out to do an outreach programme, a trial study before commencing a baseline survey and meetings with community members located in various areas in Bangalore city within the reach of the community station broadcast.

The areas that were included in the survey were :

• Banaswadi
• Goripallya
• JJR Nagar ( Jag jeevan Ram Nagar)
• Oklipuram
• Cubbonpet
• Ulsoor

In the Banaswadi area, three meetings were held in an informal set-up and about 20 women attended the meeting comprising of various age group from 14 years to 50 years.

Many were not even aware of their age which disclosed the fact that they were illiterate and immigrants to the city, seeking a livelihood.

The group consisted essentially of migrant, casual daily wage worker, who were working on construction sites and also the military campus civil works called MEG.

The groups seemed to have migrated from neighboring states like Vizag, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and northern parts of Karnataka.

The spoken languages they knew included Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Marathi and some Hindi- Urdu dialects and Hindi.

The meetings were held for about 2 hours on the construction site where the women stayed in temporary shelters.During the course of these discussions several health related issues like menstruation, menstrual hygiene, child vaccination, pregnancy and related issues, contraception, oral hygiene, eye care, body aches and pains to childcare to daily ailments were discussed.

Many women confessed to not even being aware of their own pregnancy. The other findings included the following:

• Care during menstruation including cleanliness, cramps, inability to work, mood swings
• Many of them refused to vaccinate their own children during polio camps due to rumors on deaths after vaccination and the hype spread by television news channels
• Many cases were reported of self medication directly from small pharmacists and drug stores on the advice of shop keepers for minor ailments like fever, cold, diarrhea, cough etc.
• The women also admitted to not having traditional knowledge of simple home remedies to deal with minor problems
• Toilets and other sanitation facilities were not provided or available
• Personal hygiene was subject to the availability of supply of fresh water
• Many of them were unaware of other health related problems like malnutrition, anemia, diabetes, hyper tension, etc, stemming primarily from lack of education or awareness of such diseases. The women admitted to only knowing about high blood pressure based on hearsay like angry temperament.

In the Goripallya / JJR nagar area, in the first meeting with link workers and community members the following were the findings during the interactions:

• Most teenage girls were unaware of their body changes during puberty and also sexual maturity.
• The completely lacked knowledge of sex education and reproduction.
• Many were vulnerable and dangerously exposed to unprotected teenage sex, leading to prostitution
• Complete lack of contracting communicable and sexually transmitted diseases.
• Total lack of knowledge of body and skin care
• Poor personal hygiene, bad sanitation habits

PROJECT: KUVARI LADKIYO KE LIYE LAINGIK SHIKSHAN (Sensitization Program for Teenage Girls on Sexual Health )

From June first week, every week Radio Active staff along with a resource person will engage high schools students (girls) in making them aware of changes in their body, emotions during puberty, personal hygiene, menstruation, sexually transmitted diseases, HIV / AIDS, pregnancy, abortions, nutrition etc.

SCIENCE FOR WOMEN'S HEALTH & NUTRITION - PART 2

SWHN is a community based woman and children’s health radio programme series which aims at educating women in the lower/middle income and marginalized women’s groups in Bangalore’s slum areas, to develop a scientific approach to health and hygiene, dispelling superstitious beliefs, myths surrounding health issues and developing a proactive attitude towards building a healthy body and cultivating a scientific temperament in their daily lives and changing social milieus. The programme aims at informing and educating women in acquiring the power to leverage her strengths in her given social environments and to acquire the ability to cope with the strain and drudgery of their everyday lives. These issues could range from good parenting, child rearing, common day-to-day ailments to first aid. In addition preventive, palliative and community care, adolescent issues like menstrual hygiene, protecting against and prevention of communicable diseases like, STDs, HIV and TB. Other issues will include commonly encountered problems of women like anemia, and low birth weight in infants and poor health in post-partum mothers and nursing mothers. Community health and hygiene with improved sanitation habits will also be imparted.

Radio Active hopes to encourage women to take this opportunity to suggest, participate and produce programme, empowering them with a sense of ownership of community radio. Setting up of Radio Active Women’s Listenership clubscan be created a spirit of caring, preserving and nurturing overall good health.

HUMAN RIGHTS AWARENESS TRAINING PROGRAMMES

Radio Active in association with SICHREM, will be launching a series of Legal Clinic in different localities in Bangalore.

INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF ASTRONOMY: ASTRONOMY QUIZ

Radio Active will be launching an awareness programme on Astronomy. The main objectives are to encourage school students to understand and appreciate science. This will be in the form of a inter school quiz competition for students of age group between 7years to 10 years.

STRAY PUPPY ADOPTION CAMPS

Radio Active in association with The Golden Husk will be launching stray puppy adoption camps in Bangalore, in addition to adopting specific areas to vaccinate, sterilizing dogs. The project will foster strays and treat injured animals at the animal shelter being set up by Jain University.

Radio Active will implement series of radio programs along with outreach activities to sensitize the community towards adopting a more humane approach towards stray animals.
